Maratea, Basilicata

Maratea is 97 miles south of Naples, and 69 miles from Salerno. The beaches here are similar to those found on the Amalfi coast yet far less crowded. There is a 19 mile stretch of coastline full of quiet, pebbly beaches leading to clear and clean blue waters. Maratea itself is a peaceful hilltop town from which you can see wonderful views of the area.

Maremma, Tuscany

The Maremma is on the Tuscan coast between Cecina and Tarquinia. This coastline has remained largely untouched and is characterized by rocky cliffs, pine forests and olive groves. Castiglione della Pescaia and Marina di Grosseto are charming fishing towns that are surrounded by splendid sandy beaches. They are particularly popular with Italian holiday makers.

Caprera Island, Sardinia

Caprera Island is situated in the La Maddalena Archipelago in Sardinia and is the second largest island in the national park. It is full of soft, white, sandy bays and the waters surrounding the island are a dazzling turquoise. Cala Andreani, Cala Portese, Cala Napolitano and Cala Caprarese are all fantastic bathing spots, as well as the tiny beaches of Cala Serena and Cala Garibaldi.

Italy has to be top of the list of exciting sailing destinations. The 7,600 kilometers of sparkling coastline are steeped in history and natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy Unesco World Heritage Sites, art galleries and gelatories galore. Explore ancient cities or relax in sandy coves – just be sure to sample the mind blowing cuisine along the way.

1. Le Cinque Terre
Otherwise known as the Italian Riviera. In the North East of Italy, colorfully painted houses perch on high cliffs and overlook the ocean. Footpaths along the coast lead to breathtaking view after breathtaking view. Vineyards nestle in the hillsides and picturesque ports sit by the sea.

2. The Tuscan Archipelago
Tuscany is brimming with beauty and architectural splendor. The Tuscan Archipelago National Park lies offshore amidst the emerald waters, and holds many more treasures.

3. The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is un-missable for sailors. Naples is the home of Pizza and Pompeii, and the islands of Ischia, Procida and Capri are glamorous island getaways.

4. Sicily
Order a strong espresso and get ready to sail the rugged coastline of Sicily. Cruise to the seven Aeolian Islands of volcanic origin, where the atmosphere is smoldering.

5. Sardinia
Sailing in Sardinia’s other worldly beauty is an unforgettable experience. The La Maddalena Archipelago National Park is particularly mesmerizing. The pristine sandy beaches and clear waters here are the best in Europe.

With over a thousand beautiful islands in Croatia the choice can be a little overwhelming. Here are a few of the best for culture, beaches, nature and nightlife.

Culture:

The island of Korcula is jam packed with historical sites. Korcula is a medieval city and the old town is surrounded by a 14th century fortress. Within the city there is the St Mark’s Cathedral and Abbey Treasury of St Mark, and several gothic, renaissance and baroque palaces. Visitors can watch the Moreška Sword Dance during summer, which is a traditional Korculan dance telling the story of a white king fighting for a kidnapped princess.

Beaches:

Mljet is the perfect place to enjoy the waters of the Adriatic – there are many beautiful sandy beaches such as: Sutmiholjska Beach, Blaci Beach, Veliko Jezero Beach and Saplunara Beach. The island of Cres has a good variety of beaches, and many are secluded. The best can be found near the villages of Lubenice, Ustrine, Valun and Stivan.

Nature:

Mali Losinj is known as the island of vitality due to its clean air and rich flora and fauna. Guests can visit the aromatic garden and learn about the many plants and herbs that are grown on the island for medicinal purposes. There are several wonderful walking trails such as the Mali trail and the paths of Lošinj’s captains that both lead to hidden coves. Walking along Dolphin Way you are likely to see the local bottlenose dolphins playing in the sea.

Nightlife:

The island of Pag is the only place in Croatia where bars and clubs have 24 hour licenses, and all night beach parties take place at Kalypso, Papaya and Aquarius. Hvar town on Hvar also has a lively party scene, and there are plenty of cool nightspots where you can sip cocktails amongst the Venetian architecture.
